THE forward Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, announced today his withdrawal from the Portuguese football team, through a video posted on his social networks, on the eve of the squad for the final games in the Nations League being announced.
“To the Portuguese, the time has come to give back the number 7 shirt for the national team to all of us. I never felt it was exclusively mine, but for 23 years I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it, defending it and taking it to stadiums all over the world. It was not an easy decision, because there are decisions that are not just made with the head, they are also made with the heart”, he began by saying in the farewell video.
On September 30th, remember, the striker left the Portuguese national team training camp on the eve of the match against Denmark, the third in Group A4 of the League of Nations, at the beginning of Jorge Jesus’ cycle as coach of the national team, who replaced the Spaniard Roberto Martínez after the 2026 World Cup.
World record holder for national team games, with 234 ‘AA’ caps, and for goals, with 146 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo’s career highlights include winning Euro2016, in France, as well as two editions of the Nations League, in 2019 and 2025, after the bad-memory final of Euro2004, at home.
Meanwhile, reactions to the announcement of CR7’s departure from the national team are multiplying.
