THE The possibility of Paulo Fonseca taking over, soon, the technical command of Sporting’s main team is increasingly real, and, according to information collected by Sport at the Minutethere are already contacts underway between all parties involved so that this ‘courtship’ can lead to ‘marriage’.
The management led by Frederico Varandas is not satisfied with the way the current 2026/27 sports season is unfolding, so at the moment everything points to it being a mere matter of time before Rui Borges is fired, despite having renewed his contract precisely half a year ago, until June 2028.
Faced with this scenario, the green and white structure wasted no time and began to survey the market in search of alternatives, having identified the Portuguese-Mozambican as the strongest candidate to take on the role, even if this means paying compensation to Olympique Lyon, a club with which he has a valid relationship until the end of the season.
In this sense, a path of dialogue is underway, not only with the 53-year-old coach himself, but also with the fifth-placed teams in Ligue 1, who, no matter how much they want to prolong the connection they maintain with him, are going through a delicate financial moment that does not give rise to great extravagance.
Born in Nampula, Paulo Fonseca moved to Portugal at a young age, having played as a central defender in Galitos, Santoantoniense, Barreirense, Leça, Belenenses, MarÃtimo, Vitória SC and Estrela da Amadora, before embarking on a coaching career, which began, precisely, in the Tricolores’ youth ranks.
From then on, he spent time at 1.º Crédito, Odivelas, Pinhalnovense, Desportivo das Aves, Paços de Ferreira, FC Porto, Sporting de Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk, AS Roma, Lille, AC Milan and, since January 2025, Olympique Lyon. This, without ever losing sight of… Sporting, his favorite club since he was a child.
Now, with proven evidence, not only in Portugal, but also abroad, he is following the path to fulfill his dream of many years, and take the helm of the green and white emblem, at a time when it is going through one of the most turbulent moments of recent years, with the hope of being able to right the ‘ship’.
Rui Borges has two ‘finals’ ahead of him
For now, Rui Borges is the coach of Sporting, but the fact that he ended the tenth round of the I League in third place, nine points behind the leader, FC Porto (a scenario that, at the very least, leaves the candidacy for the title of national champion ‘shaking’), means that his stay in the position is seen as practically impossible.
After, last Friday, getting the better of Casa Pia, at the Rio Maior Municipal Stadium, by 0-2, the Mirandelenense focuses its attention on the trip to Stamford Bridge, where it will face Shakhtar Donetsk, counting for the fourth round of the Champions League league phase. Afterwards, they will return to the José Alvalade Stadium, to face Moreirense.
There will be another break for international competitions, which, from the perspective of the green and white SAD, will be the ideal time to apply the much-hyped ‘psychological whiplash’, as Paulo Fonseca will have extra time to start putting into practice the ideas he has in mind to turn the tide of events.
