Barcelona threatens Luis Suárez’s continuity at Sporting

Date:

Luis Suárez is on the list of potential reinforcements for Barcelona’s attacking front, with a view to the new 2026/27 sporting season. The information was provided, late this Friday morning, by Fabrizio Romano, an Italian journalist specializing in issues related to the transfer market.

At this moment, the priority of the management led by Joan Laporta is to ‘rescue’ Julián Álvarez, but, given the successive ‘denials’ he has been receiving from Atlético de Madrid (the club with which he has a contract valid until June 2030), he has already started to probe the closed season in search of alternatives, and that is when the name of the Colombian international comes up.

The two-time reigning Spanish champions know that acquiring the 28-year-old player “will not be easy”, as he is seen by the green and white team as “a key player” for the challenges that lie ahead, in addition to the fact that he is ‘shielded’ by a release clause worth 80 million euros.

Even so, they could even move from intentions to actions, “from next week”, if, by then, they are not able to unblock negotiations with the colchoneros for the Argentine, who has already been associated with a series of other ‘colossi’, such as Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and even Real Madrid.

Between errands and ‘betrayals’, Luis Suárez’s turbulent start to the season

Luis Suárez has been experiencing a particularly turbulent start to the season at Sporting, after a World Championship that was also less than happy, which ended in the round of 16, as a result of the defeat suffered against Switzerland, in the penalty shoot-out, in which he did not score any goals.

In between, the striker took everything and everyone by surprise, when he accepted being used as a ‘trump card’ by Hakan Safi, in the elections for the presidency of Fenerbahçe. However, given Aziz Yildirim’s victory, he had no alternative but to return to Portugal to join the Lions’ pre-season work.

The signs have not been the best since then. Amidst rumors of a ‘mismatch’ with Rui Borges, in training, he lost the starting spot to Fotis Ioannidis, and did not appear to be in a position to regain it anytime soon, at least, taking into account the ‘disastrous’ replacement for the Greek, in the 2-2 draw with Estrela da Amadora.

It is also necessary to take into account the successive biblical passages that he has been sharing on social media, the last of which, on Thursday: “For our current difficulties are small and will not last long. However, they produce for us a glory that will last forever, and which is of much greater weight than the difficulties”.

Rui Borges denies “episodes”

Even so, on Thursday, at the press conference previewing the match of the second round of the I League, against Vitória SC, at the José Alvalade Stadium, Rui Borges denied any type of “episode” with Luis Suárez: “He’s a Sporting player, he’s been training since the day we said he had to train. If he trains well, he goes to the game. If he doesn’t train well, he doesn’t go to the game”.

“Fenerbahçe isn’t even a topic. It’s natural, he’s the top scorer in the Portuguese championship, he had a great championship… It’s natural that they want Suárez, as they want Geny (Catamo) and many other players, he’s part of the market. Besides, I’m not even worried about that”, he began by stating.

“He showed up on the day he had to show up, he’s been training since that day, training well. He’s not in the best physical shape, he’s looking for that. He’s been training well, he’s going to the game tomorrow. Regarding social media… So many players post messages. We’re not naive, it’s each person’s interpretation”, he continued.

“I can read the same word and interpret it differently. About a year ago, he published several publications. The guys have now remembered to look at Suárez’s publications. It’s a non-issue. He trains well, goes to the game. He’s looking for the best physical shape, we all know that. He will be an important player for Sporting throughout the season”, he concluded.
