THE The winter transfer market only opens for more than two months, but Sporting is already active, studying the possibility of taking advantage of it to acquire another winger, as Geny Catamo and Nestory Irankunda threaten to become ‘headaches’, according to this Tuesday’s edition of the newspaper A Bola.
In the case of the Mozambican international, the main threat is the name of Sunderland, a club that already tried to ‘rescue’ him, last summer, before running into the intransigence of the management led by Frederico Varandas. Nothing that, however, will prevent you from returning to the load, next January.
The black cats, remember, started by sending a concrete proposal to the José Alvalade Stadium in the order of 30 million euros, plus ten million euros in bonuses, which was promptly rejected, so they upped the ante, to 33 million euros, plus seven million euros in bonuses, with the same outcome.
At the time, the green and white structure insisted that it would only be willing to give up what is one of Rui Borges’ main ‘weapons’ in exchange for a fixed 40 million euros, so the dialogue ended up falling apart. Still, the next closed season may even bring news on this front.
Nestory Irankunda, who arrived at Sporting from Watford, in exchange for a fee of around 15 million euros (which could rise to 18 million euros, depending on the achievement of objectives), will, with a high degree of probability, be called up by Australia’s main team for the Asian Cup.
The competition will take place in Saudi Arabia, between January 5th and February 7th, 2027, so the lions run the risk of being deprived of their services for approximately one month. This, despite the fact that the race is under threat, due to the instability that is being experienced in the Middle East.
Amora attentive to the interest in Geny Catamo
Geny Catamo, remember, arrived at Amora in 2018, from Black Bulls, demonstrating such potential that, in the following season, he was recruited by Sporting. However, at the time, only 25% of the Mozambican international’s economic rights were held by the green and white structure.
The Lions never hid their intention to strengthen their position, when it comes to this issue, but the truth is that they only managed to do so in July 2025, when they disbursed something like 2.25 million euros for an additional 65% of the player’s pass, thus starting to hold 90% of it.
Signing what is already the best start to the season of his career (he already has two goals and four assists after four official games), the winger is, in parallel, negotiating the renewal of his current contract, which remains valid until June 2029, with a termination clause worth 60 million euros and a salary of 600 thousand euros net per year.
