Geny Catamo is a coveted player after a somewhat irregular start to the season at Sporting. The Mozambican winger started the season in the best possible way, but has been losing steam in the Lions’ attack. Even so, this Monday’s international press reports that Sunderland is not rethinking its interest in the player and will even try to sign him.
According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, through Sky Sports Switzerlandthe number 10 of the lions remains very present on the list of potential reinforcements for the black cats, although there is one obstacle to take into account.
Their search for a right winger remains active and Geny Catamo should be revisited in January, even though the transfer budget must be approved internally by the club’s management.
The same publication indicates that Sunderland is interested in the Mozambique international winger, but that they are not willing to pay more than 35 million euros for the 25-year-old player.
After a proposal rejected in the summer transfer market valued at around 30 million euros, the truth is that Sporting’s response should be the same as it was a few months ago: either they pay the termination clause valued at 60 million euros, or nothing is done.
Coach Régis Le Bris likes Catamo’s profile, in order to complement that of Malick Fofana on the opposite wing of Sunderland’s attack, although the way he moves into the middle from the right is something that attracts English officials even more to a large investment in the player from the Alvalade club.
Interest exists, but money is another story
Although interest has been active since the last transfer market, the truth is that Sunderland may not be able to obtain the necessary authorization to access the funds if they manage to reach an agreement with Sporting.
This is because the management of the black cats has not yet given the green light to make a ‘serious’ move for the 25-year-old winger, with more internal meetings needed to reach a decision on whether (or not) a formal proposal will be made by the international for Mozambique.
However, Geny Catamo’s presence in Sunderland’s transfer targets is undeniable, even though they face fierce competition from Premier League clubs.
In addition to the group from the north of England, there is also interest from their rivals Newcastle United, as well as Everton, Leeds United, Bournemouth and even Brentford.
This season, Geny Catamo has played 12 games for Sporting, with a total of two goals scored and four assists on his record, having a contract until June 2029 with the green and white team.
