THE The Portuguese women’s team will host Iceland at the D. Afonso Henriques Stadium, in Guimarães, on December 1, in the first game of the second qualifying play-off for the World Cup, the Portuguese Football Federation announced today.
After around three years, the team led by national coach Francisco Neto returns to the ‘cradle city’, to fight for a place in the 2027 World Cup, taking place from June 24th to July 25th, in Brazil.
“Guimarães breathes football and I am absolutely convinced that the ‘navigators’ will feel the strength and affection of all the people of Guimarães, as well as all the Portuguese who gather at the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques to support them on this journey towards the World Cup”, said the president of Guimarães City Council, Ricardo Araújo.
The north of Portugal will once again host a game for the women’s team, after Barcelos and Vizela had already hosted the ‘navigators’ this year in qualifying games for the World Championship.
Portugal, which made its debut in a final stage of the World Cup in 2023, will face a two-legged play-off against Iceland, with the first game on Portuguese soil, on December 1st, and the second in the Icelandic city of Reykjavik, on December 5th.
In the first play-off, the ‘quinas’ team overcame Northern Ireland, with two victories, 4-0 away and 3-1 at home.
