DAfter two consecutive defeats and some white sheets, Sporting is now breathing better. The Leonine team guaranteed, on Tuesday night, their presence in the final four of the League Cup, by winning, 2-1, against Marítimo.
In a highly contested encounter with several balls hitting the post, it ended up being Pedro Lima, making his debut as a starter for Sporting, wearing the mantle of a hero to ward off the evil eye and seal the Lions’ qualification.
Sporting is now waiting for the winner of Thursday’s Minho derby between Sporting de Braga and Famalicão to find out who they will face in Leiria next January.
Game movie:
After defeats against LASK Linz, in the Champions League, and Académico de Viseu, in the last round of the Portuguese championship, it was a red-hot Rui Borges who appeared on the Alvalade Stadium pitch for the third straight home game in the last week. And the whistles that were heard coming from the stands proved this.
The Leonine coach promised several changes and initiated a genuine revolution in the starting eleven, with eleven changes compared to the team that performed against Académico de Viseu. Highlights include Moncef Zekri’s absolute debut and then first-team debut and the lack of weight on the game record of names like Luis Suárez and Gonçalo Inácio.
