Another I League team out of the Cup. Moreirense eliminated by AVS

Date:

THE AVS today defeated Moreirense, from the I League, 1-0, in the third round match of the Portuguese Football Cup, holding back Rodrigo Pinho’s goal in the opening moments of the match.

The Brazilian’s solitary goal ensured Aves’ passage to the fourth round of the premier competition for the third consecutive year, while Moreirense is the second representative from the first division eliminated at this stage of the competition, after Nacional.

The second-tier team started the match in the best possible way, opening the scoring after three minutes, with a great shot from Rodrigo Pinho, in what was the forward’s sixth goal of the season.

More dangerous in the opponent’s final third, Talles Wander threatened the second goal in the 18th minute, in an individual play in which, after winning the physical duel with Maracás, he did not define correctly and the shot went wide of the left post.

In the middle of the first half, Moreirense responded to a deep pass from João Veloso, isolating Leandro behind the defense, who crossed, first time, and Leonardo Vonic deflected wide in the face-to-face with Raul Steffens.

In the 28th minute, Vonic stole the ball from Rosic inside the penalty area and shot dangerously towards the Aves goal.

Before the break, a new setback arose for Moreira de Cónegos’ team with the red going directly to Maracás, after a harsh tackle on Rodrigo Pinho.

Upon returning from the locker room, Moreirense came back better, with Tiago Andrade appearing behind the defense after Nile John’s pass, but the shot went wide of the opponent’s goal.

With a numerical advantage, AVS reacted and was again very close to the second goal with a first shot from Diogo Brasido at the post and, on the rebound, Roni shot wide.

In the 79th minute, Yan Licon wasted Moreirense’s best opportunity, with a shot at the goalkeeper inside the small area.

In the final stretch, Moreirense tried to react to the deficit on the scoreboard, but the Aves defense managed to remove the danger from their goal and secured passage to the next stage of the competition.
