Rui Borges’ departure after almost two years: “My first word goes to manager Rui Borges and the rest of the technical team. I thank you for almost two years of excellent work on behalf of the club. The second word goes to Tiago Fernandes and the technical team, for the professionalism with which they faced and carried out this thankless mission of, in a short time, managing the team as they had to do. Before introducing our new coach, it is entirely fair to talk about Rui Borges and the reason for the decision. I confess that I am somewhat surprised, or perhaps not, when Recently, Rui Borges’ work has been analyzed as something that failed or didn’t go so well. I could evaluate the work on a scale. Rui Borges and his technical team were not mediocre, satisfactory or good.
Analysis of Rui Borges’ work: “Very good because in almost two years they managed to win a second championship. They achieved a double that this club had eluded 23 years ago. He achieved the best campaign in this club’s Champions League history. He managed to be the second highest scoring coach in the League, after Ruben Amorim and ahead of Jorge Jesus, among other achievements. A coach leaves who, in addition to these achievements, remains in Sporting’s best stories. He remains a great man, surrounded by humble, serious men, good men. Why the decision now and not two or three months ago. About a month ago, I was asked why I didn’t fire Rui Borges. Our analysis was simple, we don’t make decisions exclusively based on results. For us, this start to the championship, with a loss of six points, was due to extraordinary factors, such as own goals. defeats at home. Unlike the loss of points in that period that I described, Sporting was not superior to its opponents. The internal management of these defeats led us to make the decision that we did not continue the cycle with Rui Borges. This was our decision. The club’s defense was to make the decision we made.”
